Bryan came to the practices of Vinyasa yoga and meditation in 2011 as means for working with anxiety and depression. Continuously transformed by these practices, Bryan seeks to share their power with others. The foundation of Bryan’s teaching grows from his daily asana, dhyana (meditation), and pranayama practice as well as study with Ellie Burke, Karen Kelly, and Heather Seagraves, with whom he completed the YogaWorks 200 hr RYT program. He has completed a mentorship program with Ellie Burke as well as Jason Ray Brown's Kinesiology of Yoga Asana online program. He has completed workshops with Leigh Kresgie, Ty Landrum, Tim Feldmann and Chrissy Carter and has been studying Ashtanga Yoga since 2018. His current teachers include Kyra Haigh, Gina Romagnoli, and Leigh Kresgie. He teaches daily Yoga classes during the winter and spring at Collegiate School in Richmond, VA, where he also serves as Band Director. Bryan has served on the board of Project Yoga Richmond, an organization that focuses on donation-based classes and community service through yoga. He formerly taught group classes at Ashtanga Yoga Richmond.
We practice asana to find strength without tension. Unburdened by tension, we move freely. Moving freely, we learn stillness. In stillness, we observe the breath. Observing the breath, we quiet the breath. Quieting the breath, we observe the mind. Observing the mind, we experience thoughts as sensations passing through awareness. When all thought passes through, only emptiness, our true nature, remains. The practice becomes an act of devotion when we realize emptiness is always present.

I was able to have some private yoga practice and class practice with Mr. Hooten. He treated me with a lot of respect and he had patience with me.
He taught me to "allow things to be as they are", which helps me with yoga and my everyday life. Please go see Mr. Hooten. He is so awesome.

My private lessons with Bryan jump-started my yoga practice after many years of dormancy, and got me ready for his group classes. Having been practicing yoga consistently now for four months with Bryan, I'm seeing great results in recovering from a hip injury, and in managing my scoliosis too! To have a teacher that balances the traditions of yoga with modern anatomy study makes the experience much richer. I always have a rejuvenation of energy and a sense of balance after Vinyasa with Bryan. Each week's Vinyasa I session is phenomenal, and it has become my way of restoring some calmness throughout the busy week. I have Bryan to thank for his tailored approach to my specific concerns and limitations, and for his patience too.
Thank you Bryan, for your teaching and for your care!

Bryan is a gifted teacher whose passion shows in his teaching as each class is well crafted, and he patiently works with every student to help us find our way through the practice. As a runner and cyclist, I greatly appreciate the extra time and variations he offers to help develop or soothe those areas that I use so often. Private lessons with Bryan led me discover new strength in myself which helps me deal with a life long struggle with anxiety.
For all these reasons, and many more, I am truly grateful for Bryan's teaching.

Bryan's a kind, down-to-earth teacher who meets you where you are yet encourages you to challenge yourself. He crafts his classes like conversations, tailoring to accommodate injuries or requests and offering helpful adjustments where needed. During each class I can expect to laugh, learn something new, push a little deeper into my practice, and leave feeling better.

Bryan is a very knowledgeable, talented instructor whose enthusiasm for the practice is genuine and contagious - feeding your interest and growing it at the same time. He teaches in an easy, almost conversational way that allows you to reach further for your goals because you feel comfortable with him. I went into classes with him hesitant about the very idea, and I now look forward to them every time - not only because Bryan's instruction is so enjoyable, but because he made yoga something I wanted to learn more about.
